Zambronis claim 2018 Keaney Cup!

Written by Greater Sudbury Ball Hockey League

The New Sudbury Zambronis are the 2018 Keaney Cup Champions and, will represent the GSBHL at the 2018 OBHF Provincials in Kitchener Ontario!

"We're old guys and we beat the young guns," beamed New Sudbury Zambronis goaltender Frank Vizza, not long after an outstanding performance in helping lead his team to a 3-0 win over the Junction Creek Swamp Donkeys Wednesday night at the McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff.

"It might not happen the next time we play them."

Giving up likely five to six years or more, across the board, to the Donkeys, the Zambronis utilized a very effective slow-down and ball control tactic, especially after opening the scoring, in adding the GSBHL playoff title to their regular season crown.

"We wanted to try and dominate the ball, don't cough it up through the middle," said Vizza. "Some of those guys have played junior hockey, they know the game." While that may be true - the Swamp Donkeys roster is littered with names of players who have suited up in the past decade or so with local "AAA" hockey teams - the Zambronis certainly know the amended indoor on-cement version quite well.

"Most of the guys are on our play pretty much three times a week, all year round, in the schools in the winter," said Vizza, the 41 year old backstop of the squad. "When we were kids, we would play outdoors, at Delki Dozzi."

Andrew Selbie scored twice to lead the way for the winners, Kevin Brosseau added a solo marker, and Michael Robineau remained a constant threat, from start to finish.

The victory mark's the second consequetive  Keaney Cup Championship for Brosseau and Robineau. For the Swamp Donkeys, the loss marks back-to-back losses in the final (Competed as Dynasty in 2017).

The consolation final would see Sudbury Rust Never Sleeps pull away in the final twenty minutes, outscoring the Nickel City Mallards 6-0. Andrew Rocher drilled home the hat-trick to lead the way for the winners, with Daniel Naponse adding a pair, Marty Scheer closing off the scoring and Justin Soucy registering the shutout.

Now in its second summer of existence, the GSBHL moved indoors in 2018, following year one competition at Ridgecrest playground. "We affiliated with the OBHF (Ontario Ball Hockey Federation), and this allows us to coincide things with their provincial championships, help our teams prepare for provincials, get accustomed to the rules," noted lead president Corey Langella

Langella was on hand to dole out the Berk Keaney Sr Memorial Trophy to the Zambronis, after presenting it to the Flying Elbows in 2017. "There was no person I know in this city that was more dedicated than he (Keaney Sr) was," said Langella.
